Dear Turf Field Representative:

Hello.  I came across you website and just wanted to express my support for what you are doing for the Babylon Student Athletes and the Athletic department as a whole.  I am not sure how I can directly help your committee other than contributing advertising money for events, but please feel free to contact me if you need contributors for events/ fundraisers etc., or if you think I can help in other ways.

I have seen you problem first hand.  I am a local chiropractor, but also a Certified Athletic Trainer who helped out the athletic department and Athletic Director Bob  Mayo part-time  in the 2004-2005 athletic year providing sports medicine coverage for the various fall and winter sports teams until a fulltime replacement was found.

While working my first home football game I was shocked by the condition or (de condition) of the football field.  I realize I am “preaching to the choir”, but since I am not a Babylon native I was  not aware that most of the middle and HS athletes use the same field.  It was only September and the field was in late season form, and I presume it had looked like that since the end of last spring.

While on the sideline for a handful of games and practices it was my opinion that not only did the field look horrible, it was unsafe. Even though the grounds keepers try their best, I believe the uneven surface etc. predisposes the student athletes to increased chance of injury.  Small amounts of rain would soften the interior of the field and cause a contrast in surface.  Athletes would run from a grassy area into a dense area of mud/clay “ruts” which causes the cleats not to release properly form the ground.  Making them more susceptible to lower extremity injuries.  Even though it is commonly accepted that a fully grassed field is safer than turf, it is not the case in this instance.  It is my opinion that due to the overutilization of the field, it cannot be adequately maintained; therefore in this instance it is not safer than a turf field..  Also with the newer turf fields that are being produced they are a lot safer than the old/original turf fields.

I hope you achieve your goal ASAP, and good luck.

Sincerely,

Dr. Scott Leslie DC, ATC
